Why Cybersecurity’s Core Focus Should Be Defending Data

Mastercard’s Rigo Van den Broeck on Ensuring Cybersecurity in a Data-Driven World

The proliferation of data in today’s hyperconnected world presents significant opportunities as well as risks. Rigo Van den Broeck, executive vice president of cybersecurity at Mastercard, said that as the digital landscape evolves, companies must adapt their defenses to keep pace with both the growing data landscape and criminals using advanced tools such as AI.

But as data grows in volume and sensitivity, protecting it becomes more challenging, especially when threat actors capitalize on vast data access to enhance their attacks. Van den Broeck shared Mastercard's approach, starting with an "assess pillar" to evaluate how and where data is stored, and identify vulnerabilities.

"There's more personal data out there, and we also see more connections to data, so it becomes more accessible," he said. "That creates a lot of opportunities to build new technologies and capabilities, but on the other side, creates this huge threat component. At the end, it's all about cybersecurity."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at the GovWare Conference and Exhibition 2024, Van den Broeck also discussed:

  • How hyperconnectivity amplifies cybersecurity risks around vast amounts of data;
  • Mastercard's approach to using artificial intelligence for fraud detection and securing interactions before payments;
  • The role of data interconnectivity and cooperation in combating cybercrime on a global scale.

At Mastercard, Van den Broeck is responsible for leading the region’s safety and security and switching product strategy and developing go-to-market approaches. He has almost 30 years of experience in the card and payments industry. His expertise ranges from product and market development over different types of "change" projects driving international integration, opening new business lines and product innovation.
